12 Earthly Branches (2)

Rabbit is next in line…

They are lucky people, adorable and loved by almost everyone.  The Rabbits are very compassionate and like harmony; even tempered, and diplomatic.  They do not initiate quarrels.  They are usually very elegant, refined, cultured, sometimes a bit snobbish!  They are reliable and will appear in times when you need their help… someone you can count on.  Although timid, and love to be in the comfort zone; they have expensive taste, thrive on good wine, gourmet food, designer clothes and stimulating conversation.  If you needed advices, knock on their doors and they will give sound advices with graciousness.  They have good judgments and will climb the corporate ladder quickly.  Unfortunately, they are victims of  others bad intention.

Who are their friends then?  According to the Chinese zodiacs, those born under the animal signs of Pig and Goat.

Who are their competitor, foe?  Those born under the animal sign of Rooster.

Who are their secret friends?  Dogs.

And finally, who are the Rabbits?  People born after February 4th in 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, and 2011.

12 Earthly Branches (1)

Continuing from my previous post, as we are in a Tiger year, we shall start with the Tiger.

Here are the characteristics of the tiger.  They are unpredicted, strong, determined, attractive and courageous.   Tiger people are noisy, very outspoken and eager to attract attention around them by roaring, mind you, they can be romantic, charismatic and independent as well.  Fiercely adventurous, moody, impulsive, and reckless… yes, that's tiger also.   They live life to the fullest and on their terms.  They make good leaders and are usually very successful.  They can be boisterous or may be egoistic, in fact they are quite unreliable.  They don’t like to be challenged and wants to always win, my advice: don’t step on their tails or you will be in trouble.    Give them as many flattery as you can and they'll love you.

Who are their friends then?  According to the Chinese zodiacs, those born under the animal signs of Horse and Dog.

Who are their competitor, foe?  Those born under the animal sign of Monkey.

And finally, who are the tigers?  People born after February 4th in 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, and 2010.

Now you can start counting how many of your friends are born Tiger :)  Please feel free to share your thoughts.

We are now into the second month of our Yang Metal Tiger (庚寅 Geng Yin) year, and this second month is a Yin Earth Rabbit (己卯 Ji Mao) month.  Now what does it mean?   Well, this is the way the ancient Chinese establish the concept of time.  They use a combination of one stem which represents the qi (energy) from heaven, and one branch which represent the earthly energy.  There are altogether 10 stems and 12 branches; together they complete the cycle of 60.   (Note: There is an academic explanation of why 60 and not 120, but I won't go into details here.)

So the Chinese calendar goes on a 60-year cycle, 60 month cycle, 60 day cycle, and 60 hour cycle.  When each cycle of 60 (year, month, day, and hour) is completed, it will repeat itself and go on to another cycle of 60 again.

In Chinese, the 12 Earthly branches are called Di Zhi (地支).   Di is the earth, soil, land, ground, etc.; and Zhi is the branch, it can also mean support, or division, even to pay out or disperse.   That’s why we call it the 12 Earthly branches.

The 12 Earthly branches are also the 12 Chinese zodiacs in the Chinese Astrology, they represent 12 different animals.   According to one legend, when Buddha found enlightenment under the Budhi tree, he invited all the animals to his kingdom to celebrate… only a total of 12 animals turned up. The rat was the first, followed by the ox, then the tiger, the rabbit and so on and finally the pig.

Out of gratitude, Buddha decided to name the year after each of the animals in their order of arrival, and people born under that year would inherit the personality traits of that particular animal.

I will cover the characteristics of each and every animal in my next post.
