A Bazi chart is established using the Solar Calendar (also known as the Farmers' Calendar).  The Solar year begins around February 4th or 5th of each calendar year and the ancient Chinese considers this date the beginning of Spring.  It is a very important factor to bear in mind when determining your year pillar, especially when your birth year falls on February 4th or 5th.  Therefore, it would be wise to consult a professional to determine your correct birth year.

The year pillar and the other three pillars in a Bazi chart hold an insightful complexity relating to the people around you, the different stage of your life, and your body part.

The Year Pillar represents your adolescent life (from 1 to 17 years old), we can also deduce if you experienced an early romance.  It is a pillar representing your grandparents or parents; whereby we can determine your relationships with them.  It can also represent any authorities such as the hierarchy of an organization, of a company, or of a country.  And lastly on body part, it represents your head.

The Four Pillars of Destiny, as you probably know, is also known as Bazi (??).  Bazi literally means the eight characters.

From the chart, you can see that there are two characters in each of the four pillars; making a total of eight characters.  The top character represents the heavenly stem and the bottom character represents the earthly branch.

In other words, the heavenly stem is the body and the earthly branch is the application.  The body is what heaven has bestowed on you on that particular hour, day, month and year of your birth, it is important to know if the earthly branches support the heavenly stems.  For this, you are advised to familiarize with the interactions of the five elements, namely water, wood, fire, earth, metal.  This also accounts for the qi (energy) flow in the chart.

The earthly branch in the year pillar represents your Chinese animal sign, which is also referred to as your personal Tai Sui.  In a Bazi life reading, we focus on your Day Master and not your Chinese animal sign.   Please read Your Day Master or Self Element in my earlier posting.

By now, I hope you're familiar with a Bazi chart (see example on the left).  It composes of 4 columns or pillars derived from the year, month, day, and hour of your birth.   Each pillar contains two characters.  The upper one is known as the Heavenly Stem, and the lower character is known as the Earthly Branch.   In a Bazi reading, your animal sign of the year of birth (in this chart the Mao Rabbit) is not the focus but the Day Master Gui Water in the Day Pillar.

The Day Master represents you, through which, your personality and behavior can be unveiled by interpreting the strength of this element.

How’s the Rabbit treating you thus far?

What a relief that we got out of Yin Water Snake month with star 5 yellow residing in the center palace.  The energy was rather conflicting.  At home, we experienced a couple of minor inconveniences like water leakage and broken door knob.  The road work in front of our house and within our residence added some stress and discomfort too.

We are now into Yang Wood Horse month (the 5th solar month), the energy of this month is more accommodating.  However, the monthly star 2 has flown to join hand with annual star 5 in the East, I suggest you make sure that this area of your home be kept extremely calm and inactive.   Do not sleep in this area or make sure you have a good amount of solid metal to reduce the energy of these 2 stars.

On the positive side, the monthly star 8 is in the south, I hope you will take advantage of this vibrant good energy.  Romance and success in writing or artistic work can be found in the southwest.

Good luck!

Can we see a drama in a Bazi chart?

Well I would say, we can fore-warn a person that it will be a challenging year/month/day, but to name and identify the incident, where about and when… would be another matter.   Why is it so?  Let’s take the forest as an example.  When will there be a forest fire?   We don’t know, however, when a person accidentally or deliberately throws a cigarette butt in a very hot summer day near the forest, this will trigger and start the forest fire.   So, we need to know when and where the trigger to spark off an incident is; or it’s almost impossible to predict the drama.

I was intrigued by the shocking news that the managing director of the International Monetary Fund faces sexual assault charges in New York on early Sunday morning.  I wanted to know why such a powerful and eminent man can be trapped in such an awkward and embarrassed situation, so this is a bird’s eye view into his Bazi (Chinese Astrology or Four Pillars of Destiny) with unknown birth hour which I’d like to share with you.   More here…

Travel or Post Horse Star

The Travel or Post Horse Star (驿 馬 Yi Ma), the name suggests a horse for travel and represents your traveling luck.  Again, based on your Day or Year branch, you can identify your Travel Star in the table below.

If you’re blessed with this star, it could suggest that you will travel for work, perhaps overseas postings, or migrate to another country.   Depending on how this star is associated with your natal chart, it can bring you fame, wealth or power.   However, if this star is unfavorable in your chart, you’re advised to abstain from traveling.   If you have too many of this star in your chart, it indicates that your life is rather unsettled due to frequent travel, like a gypsy moving from one place to another.

If this star does not appear in your natal chart, do not despair, it can come in annual luck pillar or your 10-year luck pillar.   If this star is favorable and proves beneficial in your natal chart, you can activate the energy according to the star’s direction.

PS – I have a Travel Star and am leaving for a well-deserved vacation :-)  Will be back blogging after May 4th.   Until then, stay safe!

Commander or General Star

將星 (Jiang Xing – Commander or General Star)

This star represents a military general, in the ancient times, it is associated with military services.

If you have this star in your chart (see table below), it indicates that you are brave and possess good strategy.  It also denotes an ambitious person with authority, power, leadership, and influence; these excellent qualities could easily help you to land on a high ranking position in any business management or political environment.

If you are sitting on your general star, meaning if it appeared on your day branch, it would be hard to defeat you in a “battle”.  If the star is favorable, you will shine and stand out in any crowd; but if it’s unfavorable, it will bring harm and blockage in life.

Peach Blossom Star (2)

Today, we'll cover the Star of Romance (桃花 tao hua), it can be divided in two categories; Internal and External Peach Blossoms.

Internal Peach Blossom refers to the star appearing on the year and/or month branch of your Bazi natal chart, whereas External Peach Blossom refers to the star appearing on the hour branch of your Bazi natal chart.   Internal Star of Romance indicates a loving relationship between husband and wife, while external Star of Romance indicates the possibility of looking for new relationships.

If you were SINGLE, and wish to meet a partner, you can try to activate this star by putting fresh flowers with clean water in a vase and placing in the directions of the stars indicated in the table below.   Statistically, you will see the result between a day and a week's time.   However, if you were overwhelmed by the opposite sex flocking to you, do not hesitate to remove the flowers.

A few words of cautions:
* When the flowers withered in the vase, remove immediately and replace fresh flowers until you find a suitable partner

* Do not place an empty vase at this direction as it will bring ugly romance
* DO NOT activate this star if you are married as it will bring new opportunity for flirts.

Peach Blossom Star (1)

There are two types of Peach Blossom stars.  One is known as Red Peach Blossom (紅豔 桃花 hong yan tao hua) and the second is known as Star of Romance (桃花 tao hua).

Let's talk about the Red Peach Blossom here, this is inborn and cannot be activated.    People who possess this star in their natal chart (in any branch) will enjoy excellent social standing, they are sexy, good-looking, seductive, extremely romantic and have strong sexual drives.

In the old days, it is especially bad for the women to have this star in their charts as it denotes that they will magnetize men like flower attracting butterfly.   Men, on the other hand, may have undesirable love affairs.

Check out the table below, this may explain why you are so popular!;)

Academic Star

Last September, I suggested using the birth year to locate your school-age children's Academic Star read more here

This time round, we will focus on Day Stems used in Bazi analysis. The natal Bazi chart of an individual may carry the Academic Star (known as Wen Chang 文昌 in Chinese).   People who possess this star are intelligent, industrious, always in search of more knowledge; thus they can do well in their academic studies.   They will also use their intelligence and talents to turn a challenging situation into a constructive one.  They are gentle and elegant, but dislike rude and unsophisticated people.

On the other hand, if they have an abundance of this star in their natal chart, it would be a handicap.

Here's the table to look for the star
