What is considered clutter?
We all know that we cannot avoid collecting clutter; it is like dust sneaking under the sofas or gathered on top of our beautiful furniture. We clean our houses ever so often, so must we clear the clutter from time to time.
Look into your cupboards, chest of drawers, kitchen drawers, garage shelves, wardrobes, attic, under the beds, and any place where you piled up boxes of stuff which you can’t bear to throw away. I bet you will find a lot of junk which you have collected unconsciously through years of your life. So get started… throw out or give away the bits and pieces that you haven’t used to date. The broken tools and apparatus that will never get fixed; toys from when your children were young; old clothes and shoes; old magazines, newspaper, brochures, the list can go on.
Equally important is your emotional clutter… throw away those old love letters, photos of old loves, especially anything that reminds you of the bad times.
Once you’ve gone through that, you’ll be surprised to find that your house brightens up immediately, you will feel more comfortable and peaceful. This is simply because the stagnant energies are now replaced by the fresh energies and flowing freely. Now you know J
Doors’ locations and directions
Image 1: In most cases, the door is located in the middle and at the front of the house, thus sharing the same facing direction of the house, which is south.
What is Qi?
Qi (pronouced chi) is energy; qi is an invisible force, qi is air. It is one of the important concepts in the study of Feng Shui. Qi comes from all directions and is everywhere in the space we live in. Like electricity and wind, we know they are there but cannot be seen nor touched. However, we can feel the qi. When qi is absent, there is no life. This is illustrated when we walk into a house, a shop, an office, or just any living spaces; we immediately feel welcome or inversely, we turn and walk away.
This brings us to the quality of qi which can be beneficial or harmful. Beneficial qi is called Sheng Qi. When a place is full of life, looks beautiful and clean, it is filled with Sheng qi. Whereas when the room is dirty and shabby, lifeless, air is stagnate, we feel uncomfortable and sometimes even frightened, it is filled with Sha Qi.
This qi as described above will bring us fortune or misfortune depending on good or bad qi. Therefore it is vital to make sure that qi flows smoothly in our house, the rooms, the offices, and other living spaces. A very simple analogy: in Chinese Medicines, we say a person gets sick because the qi in his body is obstructed. Similarly, when the qi in a house is obstructed, the house will not be fortunate. The practice of Feng Shui is to ensure that the qi is smooth in our living spaces.
What is Feng Shui (#2)?
Let me go a step further.
Feng is wind; and
Shui is water.
The original saying is: "qi is dispersed by the wind, and retained by the water". What does it mean? Well, we can simply say that the wind brings the qi to the house, and we’ll use water to retain the qi to tap into the good energy. Qi (pronounced "chi" or energy) will affect our health, wealth, and relationships with our family members, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances.
Knowing how to balance and harmonize the qi around us; knowing how, where and when it interacts with us is the study of Feng Shui. A house may be fortunate in a period of time and unfortunate in the next period. This is attributed to the change of qi in different periods, The fact is that the same house changes at different time and space, that’s why we see people enjoying great wealth and good health in one period and (sadly) not the next.
Next week Q&A would be "what is qi?"
What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art as well as an ancient Chinese wisdom principally used by the Asian population, but now widely adopted by Westerners as well. It is the study of how the environment affects us and how to balance and harmonize the different energies surrounding us; in order to maximize our potentials to live a happier and more fulfilling life.
When implementing good Feng Shui techniques, Feng Shui can help us find a good home to live in; to use the colors and shapes of objects to harmonize our living space; place our beds correctly to gain a restful night; and improve our health and relationships at the same time. Likewise, it can be applied to help the growth of your business by harmonizing the different energies and people around the offices.
